Ethereum Name Service

ENS pursues similar goals to DNS, the internet’s domain name service, but has a significantly different architecture due to the Ethereum blockchain. Like DNS, ENS works with a system of hierarchical names separated by dots called domains, where the owner of a domain has full control over the subdomains.

Top-level domains such as „.eth“ and „.test“ are owned by smart contracts that set rules for the allocation of their subdomains. ENS also supports the import of DNS names already owned by the user for use on ENS.

Description

The simple variant of the Ethereum address

Remembering the 42 characters of the Ethereum address of yourself or your friends is impossible for most people. Therefore, the Ethereum Name Service (ENS) gives users the possibility to associate words or names that are easy to read and remember with their Ethereum address.
The chosen name is automatically translated into a machine-readable address by the ENS protocol.
In addition to ENS names, censorship-protected and decentralised websites can also be created here. These have special security advantages because they use blockchain-based domain suffixes such as .eth.
